Suva, Fiji – The Fiji Development Bank (FDB) and Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF) are exploring collaborative opportunities to advance equitable and resilient development across Fiji’s maritime communities, guided by a shared commitment to community empowerment, responsible ocean stewardship and long-term partnerships.
Fiji possesses globally significant marine assets with 3.5% of the world’s coral reefs situated within Fiji’s Exclusive Economic Zone and more than 65,000 hectares of mangroves lining its coasts. These ecosystems are central to Fiji’s economy, culture, food security and resilience presenting immense opportunities for sustainable blue economy growth.
For FDB, the engagement aligns closely with its Strategic Pillar 5 that focuses on Sustainability, Social Impact and Development that is aimed at supporting eco-inclusive growth to align to the Fiji National Development Plan.
As both organisations continue discussions on future collaboration, SPF and FDB share a common vision of supporting resilient communities, healthy ecosystems, and sustainable economic opportunities for future generations.
Recently, representatives from the SPF and FDB visited Levuka, and Vanua Balavu, to engage with local communities, government agencies, provincial authorities, and traditional leaders to better understand existing tourism practices, community aspirations and opportunities for sustainable development.
The exploratory visit and discussions highlighted the huge potential for community-based eco-tourism, and agri-tourism initiatives that celebrate Fiji’s unique culture, national heritage and traditional knowledge while creating meaningful economic opportunities for local communities.
The engagement also provided an opportunity to briefly introduce the SPF’s Sasakawa Community Based Eco-Tourism Model, which seeks to balance environmental conservation and cultural preservation with tangible economic benefits for local communities.
Through knowledge-sharing, capacity building and exchange opportunities, the model aims to support communities in developing tourism ventures that are both commercially viable and environmentally responsible.
Communities, development partners, government agencies, investors and organisations interested in contributing to the growth of a sustainable and inclusive blue economy in Fiji are encouraged to connect with the Fiji Development Bank through www.fdb.com.fj to learn more about emerging opportunities for collaboration, investment, and community-based development initiatives.
